Ian Callaghan Woodwork
A woodworker for more than 20 years, I have produced hundreds of handcrafted wooden designs as gifts, custom wood commissions, and for retail sale.
Every piece an original in some way, my portfolio is as wide as the tastes and interests of the people I make for.
It ranges across not just items for home interiors — whether that’s elegant furniture and cabinetry, charming decorative accessories, storage and shelving, mirror and picture frames, lamp stands — but extends to fun and educational toys, practical kitchen equipment, distinctive signage, rescued garden implements, bird tables, doors, and even electric guitars.
I also possess the expertise and tools to merge wood with metal components, enhancing the aesthetic and structural value of my products where that’s desired.
Although I specialise in standalone projects, I'm well-equipped to handle almost any bespoke request that doesn't require extensive on-site work, such as kitchen installations. Furthermore, while I do have a wood lathe, my focus is on crafting components for projects over bowls or similar items.
As well as individual commissions, if you are a retailer interested in stocking unusual and bespoke items, or a craft show participant seeking add-on products with a difference, feel free to contact me to discuss opportunities.
I use a wide range of woods, much of it recycled from “brown furniture” that’s low in demand but high in quality and sustainability. I also often work with “found” wood — for example from trees that friends or neighbours have had to have cut down — and which finds a more productive end use in my workshop than on a fire or in a woodchipper.
I am very happy to use client's own wood (or indeed your old furniture!) where suitable, because this can establish a nice sentimental connection, especially for gifts.
Wood from old furniture is ready immediately and generally very stable, new wood will need drying.
I can also source timber from a nearby woodyard, and get wood kiln-dried to speed up the production process if necessary.

If you're interested in custom wood commissions or stocking handcrafted pieces with a difference in a store or on a stall, please contact me to explore how we can collaborate. Larger orders may require a deposit for the purchase of materials etc
Below is a small selection of the pieces I have made more recently. There are many more under the “My Work” tab. Many of these projects started with ‘found’ wood, that is wood that came from trees that either fell or had to be felled and from which I was able to obtain timber.
